The Indian government on Wednesday launched a pilot scheme in which the public can return a health product they receive for free or for a small amount of money.
The move comes after a series of reports from India and around the world showed the country’s health systems struggling to contain the pandemic, with nearly a third of the population missing out on treatment.
The World Health Organization estimates that more than half of the country is infected.
In a statement on the initiative, the Ministry of Health said it has received around 1,000 complaints and received 1,500 returned products from people who said they were unable to return their products after being told that they would need to pay to be reimbursed.
The ministry said it had been working on the issue for several months and will launch a similar initiative in the next three weeks.
